Me&Miss Bee
When I spent the summer with my grandmother in Warwick, N.Y., she sent me down to the grocery store with a list. How could I hope to find anything on the packed, messy shelves around me?
Behind the 41____ was a lady with glasses like 42____ I’d ever seen. “You’re that Clements kid,” she said. “I’m Miss Bee. Come closer. There’s nobody here except you and me and I’m not your 43___, so I 44____ you get yourself a basket from that pile over there. If you’re 45____ you’ll be home by sundown. ” I scanned the nearest shelf for the first item on my list. 46____, it took me three wall-to-wall searches 47___I found the very item.
I visited Miss Bee a couple of times a week. Sometimes she short-changed me. Other times she 48____ or sold me an old newspaper instead of one that was current. Going to the store was more like going into battle. “ That can of beans is 49____ twenty-nine cents! ” I 50____ her one afternoon. I had watched the numbers change on the cash register closely, and Miss Bee had added 35 cents. She didn’t seem 51____ that I had caught her overcharging. She just looked at me over her glasses and 52______ the price.
All summer long she found ways to 53____ me up. By summer’s end the 54____ trip that had once taken me an hour was done in 15 minutes. The morning I was to 55____ Brooklyn, I stopped in to get a packet of gum. She asked me what I 56_______ that summer and told me her job was to teach every child she met life lessons. But I thought her idea was 57________.
Until one day I refused to help my daughter finish her math problems, suddenly, I felt like I 58____ at that grocery store where I had learned the hard way to check my 59____ along with the cashier. 60_____ my daughter went back to her homework, I wrote down some life lessons I had learned from Miss Bee.
