Sun Yueming is from China. He is fifteen years old and he is going to England for two weeks to improve his English. He is a camper at the International English Summer Camp for middle school students. He takes a plane and meets other students in Beijing who are going to the same place. He’s quite happy—two of friends are also going to Oxford but they are staying with different families.
The arrival
Oxford is a very famous university town, not far from London. There are beautiful houses and colleges, sports centers, a lot of shops and covered market in the center of the town. The English families are there waiting for their guests. “Hello, Yueming, I’m Janet,” says the mother. “Welcome to Oxford!”
At home
The house is comfortable and Yueming’s room is very nice. It’s 6 pm, time for dinner with the whole family. At first Yueming only says “Yes” or “No”, and his English sounds very strange. But the parents speak very slowly, and their eighteen-year-old son, Andy, can say two or three Chinese words.
Time for school
Yueming goes to school every day from 9am to 1pm. It is a lovely modern school. Yueming says, “We write a lot during our English lessons in China. Here we speak a lot and play a lot of games.” The teacher is very helpful, and corrects their mistakes.
And in the afternoon
But what Yueming really likes is the afternoon. He and his friends go swimming or play sports and sometimes visit nearby places. In London their program is the Tower of London and the Museum of London, and then shopping. Shopping is fun! They buy sweets, postcards and eat hamburgers and chips! In the evening Yueming stays at home. He watches TV or plays cards and games with Andy and his friends.
The English way of life
Yueming is surprised, English starts to feel so natural and he even thinks in English. He drinks a lot of tea, eats sandwiches at lunch and plays British sports. He says “Thank you”, “Please” and “Sorry” a lot, and learns to queue at bus stops. He’s careful on the roads because English people drive on the left. English is easy now! He says, “I’m really looking forward to next year’s vacation!”
