I learned an important lesson last week. Late in the evening I was walking in the park. Suddenly I heard someone crying and shouting behind the woods. I stopped to listen and understood that a girl was attacked (袭击). I heard sounds of fighting. For a while I was thinking whether to help the girl or not.
I was afraid. I was worried about my own safety. Was it better to call the police? Then I realized that the girl’s voice became weaker, so I knew I had to act quickly. Could I run away from this? Finally I decided that I had to help this unknown girl even if I might possibly get into a dangerous situation. I felt some strange changes inside, a kind of strength (力量) coming from my heart, so I ran behind the woods. I pulled the attacker off the girl. We fell to the ground and fought with each other for several minutes. Then the attacker jumped up and ran to the nearest street.
I slowly came up to the girl, who was hiding (躲藏) behind a tree. It was dark, so I could not see her face clearly. But I noticed that her whole body was shaking (发抖), so I talked to her in a soft voice. “You are safe now. The man has run away.” After a few seconds, I heard her words with a great surprise in her voice, “Dad, is that you?” And then I realized that the girl was my youngest daughter.
It’s difficult for one person to deal with all the troubles in life, so give a helping hand to people in need even if they are strangers. Remember the most beautiful gift in life is: helping others is to help yourself.
