My mother was a cleaner in our school canteen (食堂) when I was in the middle school. At that time she was such an embarrassment (难堪) to me not only because of her job but also her look. She had only one eye. Every time I saw her in my school, I pretended (假装) not to see her and ran away quickly. I never told my classmates she was my mother.

After graduating from the college, I got a good job in another city. I was quite successful. I never thought of going back to see my “ugly” mother. Then I got married and had two kids. I told my family that my parents had been dead, so they never saw my mother, even her photo. But two years later, I got a letter, it read:

My dear son Jeff,

I’m sorry to trouble you, but I haven’t seen you for a long time. I really miss you all the time. I’m afraid that I will have no chance to see you again. I am suffering from cancer (癌症). When you get the letter, don’t look for me. Maybe I am away.

I’m sorry that I was always an embarrassment to you when you were growing up. However, I had no choice. When you were very young, you and your father got into a traffic accident. Your father died at that time and you lost your left eye. As a mother, I couldn’t stand that you would have to grow up with one eye. So I had to…  I was never angry with you and I never regretted it because I love you.

I am proud of my son who is enjoying his beautiful world for me with that eye. I hope you have a good time every day.

After reading the letter, I couldn’t help crying out aloud. I felt very sorry. I realized what I had done was wrong. I really regretted doing that silly thing to my mum.
