A college in Beijing offered 100 yuan to any freshmen who came alone on the first day of school, a policy that was to encourage independence.
The money was given in cash or in pre-paid phone cards to nearly 115 students, or 10 percent of the 1,145 freshmen who arrived for their first-year studies at China Youth University for Political Sciences. A list of the recipients（接受者）has been published on the school’s website.
The move came because of the increasing concern that China’s younger generation are enjoying too comfortable a life, with a consequent loss of independence. More than 90% of college freshmen are said to arrive on campus with their parents.
The move was also helpful to students from poor families. “Most of the recipients are from remote, poverty-stricken regions, and this will give them some confidence among their rich classmates,” Wei Pingwei, a teacher at the university said.
“It also saved the school the burden of accommodating a large number of parents,” another teacher said.
